The Do-Over by Lynn Painter

“After living through a dumpster fire of a Valentine’s Day, Emilie Hornby escapes to her grandmother’s house for some comfort and a consolation pint of Ben & Jerry’s. She passes out on the couch, but when she wakes up, she’s back home in her own bed—and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again. And the next day? Another nightmare V-Day.

Emilie is stuck in some sort of time loop nightmare that she can’t wake up from as she re-watches her boyfriend, Josh, cheat on her day after day. In addition to Josh’s recurring infidelity, Emilie can’t get away from the enigmatic Nick, who she keeps running into—sometimes literally—in unfortunate ways.

How many days can one girl passively watch her life go up in flames? And when something good starts to come out of these terrible days, what happens when the universe stops doling out do-overs?” - taken from Goodreads.

This was a fabulous book that was a mixture of Groundhog Day and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Emilie is a planner, down to the perfect boyfriend. When her plans for the perfect Valentine's Day start to go awry, beginning with crashing her van into her chem lab partner Nick, who acts like he doesn’t know her. The rest of the day is an excruciating disaster. She catches her boyfriend kissing his ex, her father is moving to another state, etc. Heartbroken, she is shocked to wake up the next day to a repeat of her not so perfect Valentine’s Day. Find out why Emilie's disastrous day is on repeat and what or who it will take to get her to the 15th.

Always Jane by Jenn Bennett

“Eighteen-year-old chauffeur’s daughter Jane Marlow grew up among the domestic staff of a wealthy LA rock producer, within reach of bands she idolizes, but never a VIP. Every summer, Jane and her father head to the Sierras to work at the producer’s luxury lodge at Lake Condor—a resort town and the site of a major musical festival.

The legendary family who runs the festival are the Sarafians, and Jane’s had a longtime crush on their oldest son, Eddie—doltish but sweet. So when a long-distance romance finally sparks between them, she doesn’t hesitate to cross class lines.

But Jane’s feelings about Eddie are thrown into question after she returns to the lake and reconnects with his alluringly intense brother, the dark horse of her placid summer plans. A fellow lover of music—and hater of the game—Fen Sarafian has been ousted from the family and is slumming it at a vinyl record shop. He burns for Jane like a house on fire and will do anything to sabotage his older brother, even if it means taking a wrecking ball to a multi-million-dollar music festival. Or Jane’s heart.”
- taken from Goodreads.

Jane Marlow has long held a crush on Eddie Sarafain, even though his family is wealthy and she is the hired help. Two years have passed since her life changing accident at the lake and Eddie has finally reciprocated her feelings. Spending the summer at the lake with Eddie out of the country, Jane soon runs into Fen, Eddie’s younger brother who he has warned her to stay away from. “Eight hours.

Six friends.

One sniper . . .

Those Summer Nights by Laura Silverman

“Hannah used to be all about focus, back before she shattered her ankle and her Olympic dreams in one bad soccer play. These days, she’s all about distraction—anything to keep the painful memories of her recent past at bay, including the string of bad decisions that landed her at boarding school for a year.

Enter Bonanza, the local entertainment multiplex and site of Hanna’s summer employment. With its mini golf course, bowling alley, and arcade—not to mention her hot, flirty coworker Patrick—Bonanza seems like the perfect way to stay distracted. Until her boss announces the annual Bonanza tournament, a staff competition that brings her past Olympic nightmares crashing back into her present.

On top of that, the Bonanza staff includes Brie, the ex-best friend she cut off last year, and Ethan, her brother’s best friend who became unreasonably attractive in her year away and who accepts her, even knowing her worst secrets. Under the neon lights of Bonanza, Hannah must decide whether she can find a way to discover a new self in the midst of her old life.” - taken from Goodreads.

With flashbacks to the previous summer where her life drastically changed, Hannah Klein is trying to put her life back together. Home for the summer from boarding school for troubled teens, Hannah has a checklist from her parents to complete if she hopes to stay  home in the fall. While this might seem to be a cute rom-com at first glance, several tough topics are dealt with as Hannah tries to complete her to-do list. Will Hannah be able to find her way to who she was before and make a new future for herself?

Love, Decoded by Jennifer Yen

“High school junior Gigi Wong strives to be the best: the top student, the perfect friend, and the ideal daughter. But it's tough when there's always someone who is just a little bit better. With college applications looming, she can't help but worry that she won't make the cut. Thankfully, her best friend Kyle never fails to find the right words--and the perfect bowl of ramen--to cheer her up.

After her teacher, Ms. Harris, announces she'll be nominating students for an app writing contest, Gigi is determined to be picked. After all, first prize is an exclusive tech internship, sure to make her application stand out. There's only one problem: she doesn't have a winning program. It isn't until transfer student Etta admits she's struggling to fit in at Superbia that Gigi stumbles on an idea. She'll use her coding skills--and the matchmaking experience she's gotten from weekends with Auntie Rose--to create a friend matching app! Etta will meet new people, and Gigi will guarantee her acceptance into college. It's foolproof.

What Gigi doesn't expect is for her app to go viral around school. Soon, she finds herself at the center of a scandal--and at odds with both Etta and Kyle. Can Gigi fix what went wrong, or will her desire to be perfect cost her the people she cares about most?” - taken from Goodreads.

I didn’t realize that this story was based on Emma by Jane Austen. Gigi’s aunt is teaching her the art of matchmaking, but she thinks she can do a better job with an app she is programming. Misunderstandings and hijinks ensue as Gigi tries to make matches and fails without seeing what is happening around her. Will Gigi see the error of her ways or will she finally realize what is right in front of her?

Gigi is the younger sister of James from the author’s first book, A Taste of Love.

Meet Me in the Middle by Alex Light

“Eden had her best friend Katie—she didn’t need anyone else. But then there was Truman.

Katie’s older brother, the artist. The recluse. The boy with the innocent smile and the dangerous eyes.

Eden had never really known Truman—not until the night of Katie’s accident. That was the night they’d finally let each other into their orbits—only to have the sky come crashing down on them.

With Katie in the hospital and Truman fleeing from his grief without a word, Eden is left alone to grapple with her own pain. But when Truman returns to the city, can Eden let him back into her life knowing that their first kiss is what tore their world apart?” - taken from Goodreads.

This was a gut wrenching read of love and loss. Told between the POV of Eden, Katie’s best friend and Truman, Katie’s older brother, the story switches between the events leading up to Katie’s accident and the traumatic aftermath. Guilty over what transpired before the accident, neither Eden nor Truman can't get past that eventful night and what they feel is their part. What happened between Eden and Truman the night of Katie's accident and why was she in the car? Will either of them be able to get past their guilt to find happiness?

The Luminaries by Susan Dennard (The Luminaries book 1)

“Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you.

Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night.

Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family's good name. Or die trying.

But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for.

Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark. - taken from Goodreads.

This was a surprisingly great read that I had a hard time putting down. The families/protectors of Hemlock Falls are sorted/named after the days of the week. Winnie Wednesday still dreams of becoming a hunter even after her father’s betrayal and her family’s shunning by the community. When she enters the hunter trials to everyone’s dismay, they are shocked to see she made a kill. Winnie didn’t but she didn’t correct anyone’s assumption, especially when her family was accepted back into the Luminaries. Back into the fold, Winnie gets help from Jay Friday, a former friend. The deeper Winnie gets back into her training, the more secrets and strange happenings that occur.

Book two is expected to be published in 2023.
