This book is the third collaboration between this team of six authors. Instead of a set of interconnected love stories like the previous two titles, breakout is a spring break trip that goes horribly wrong. Six teens head to a private island but become stranded when a hurricane hits and soon the dead bodies begin to pile up that have nothing to do with the aftermath of the storm. The trails, lies, and secrets are uncovered leading up to the end of the book. Readers will be guessing at who makes it off the island alive.

This book reminded me of the Charlie Daniels song, The Devil Went Down to Georgia. Except in Carrion, Georgia, local folklore has it that there are actually three devils at the crossroads, each one more sinister than the next. They each prey on desperate residents in rural, backwater Georgia where the uber rich live close by who keep their secrets even closer.

Not all is what it seems in Carrion/Lake Clearwater. And as readers dive deeper into the story, the more all of the pieces of this story come together as Sam, Neera, Reid, and Isaiah race to figure out what has happened to Dawson Sumpter, the one person who initially ties them together. This was an excellent Southern Gothic mystery/thriller that will keep readers eagerly anticipating what really is going on in Southwest Georgia. The audio version was incredible.

This was the thrilling conclusion to what was essentially a six book series starting with A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Although we see a couple of characters from the first book make an appearance, this book focuses on our favorites from the last three books. A great ending for our characters but I would have liked to see a little bit more from Callyn at the end.

This was a book that kept you on the seat of your pants until the very end trying to uncover what really happened. Emily MIlls dies by suicide on prom night. She desperately wanted to fit in with a group of popular students known as the Thrashers. Soon, fingers start pointing at Jodi and her friends when Emily’s journal portrays a climate of bullying with Zach Thrasher being the leader. Jodi, not rich like her friends, soon discovers that she is the key to figuring out what really happened. As secrets begin to unfold, Jodi soon realizes that maybe she does not know who her so-called friends really are.

For some, this second book in the trilogy may drag out a bit, I did devour the entire book in just over one day. Even though our main characters are separated for most of the story, each provides a different aspect of the story that builds to the ending. And that ending! Readers will be invested to see how the story finally plays out.

Book three, Sparking Fire Out of Fate, is due out January 27, 2026.

If you can make it to the second half of the book, the story really ramps up and will draw you in. A Jumanji type game that is steeped in Japanese folklore, readers will want to know what really happened to Ian four years ago and what secrets will be uncovered as the game unfolds. I wasn’t expecting how the story ends and will probably pick up the second book to see how this series ends.

Book two, She Waits For You Beyond the Dark, is due out March 11, 2025.

An incredible mystery that I devoured in two days. Told in reverse chronological order from the moment everyone realizes that Giselle is missing to the beginning of the spring break cruise, readers learn what is going on between Giselle and Maggie. The plot is enhanced through flashbacks from Giselle's diary as well as current police reports. This book ends with a shocking reveal that rates won't see coming.

What starts out as a one sided fake dating arrangement soon turns into something real until a secret is uncovered. The fact that Wren works at an animal shelter makes the story that much sweeter.

This was another great whodunit by the author that will keep you on your toes until the end. Told by Goldie between Then and Now, readers will be haunted by all of the secrets she keeps and uncovers during one summer at the ultra prestigious Camp Alpine Lake.

This was a great story about how Fable’s parents met. Fans of the series will enjoy diving back into the world and discovering Saint’s background and how it influenced the man he would become. Readers learn how Saint and Isolde met and began their trading empire. A great wrap up to this series that will leave you wanting to go  back and reread the earlier books.
