I knew going in that this story loosely follows Stephen King's Carrie but throws in some social justice that is relevant to our current times. Maddy Washington is a girl who's tortured life will pull at your heartstrings. Bullied on a daily basis at school, the situation takes a horrible turn when Maddy's racial identity is uncovered. As tensions rise in small town Springville, Georgia, readers will be eagerly waiting to see what happens on prom night. 

I loved listening to this book with its multiple narrator format.

This was a sweet but frustrating continuation of Finley and Arthur’s love story that began in Christmas, Oklahoma. Now back at school, Arthur is shutting Finley out and she doesn't know why. With a new but quiet roommate and a friend from Oklahoma at Barrington, Finley is being pushed into being more social. After a heart to heart about what is going on, will Finley and Arthur be a couple on Valentine's Day or not? The ending does leave open the possibility of a third installment in this series.

I didn’t realize that this story was based on Emma by Jane Austen. Gigi’s aunt is teaching her the art of matchmaking, but she thinks she can do a better job with an app she is programming. Misunderstandings and hijinks ensue as Gigi tries to make matches and fails without seeing what is happening around her. Will Gigi see the error of her ways or will she finally realize what is right in front of her?

This story is Karen McManus at her finest. I picked up the audio version of this book on a whim completely unprepared for what the story entailed. Kiera Johnson is one of the few Black students at her high school, along with her sister Stephanie and her boyfriend Malcolm. Outside of school, Kiera has created an online gaming universe where Blacks from around the world can play without facing discrimination that is sometimes found in other role-playing games. No one knows about Keira's role in the creation of SLAY.

When a teenager is murdered in his own home over SLAY, the world begins to take notice of the game. Faced with the fact that her identity may be revealed and possible repercussions for the murder, Kiera has no one to turn to, especially when a new player to SLAY is determined to destroy the game.

This book hit me with all the feels and the identity of Dred Scott blew me away. An excellent read!

Frank Li (Frankly, pun intended) is a first-generation Korean-American. His parents are racist, having disowned his older sister for marrying a black man and believing that Frank should only date fellow Korean teenagers. He knows that his parents will never tolerate him dating his white girlfriend. So when the opportunity arises to fake date a friend in the same situation that he's in, it seems like the perfect plan.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading a Korean-American male POV, especially after reading I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee. This was a heartwarming story about trying to be true to oneself while still upholding your parents’ beliefs.

This was a cute retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale where a generations-old curse and the misplaced need for revenge bring together Jaya and Grey. There is a lot of back story to helpful in the reader on the history of the curse throughout the book. The best part of the story isn't Jaya and Grey’s slow-burn Romance or the details from the fairytale sprinkled throughout, but the Rao sisters’ relationship. The build-up for the next book in the series does take place in the second half of this novel.

Book two in the series, Of Princes and Promises, is due out Feb. 1, 2021.

This was a cute rom com about Becca Hart and Brett Wells who begin a fake relationship to make other people happy. As the fake parts start to become real, both Becca and Brett must face both past and present betrayals in order to see if the fake can move into a real relationship that they both deserve.

Four Days of You and Me by Miranda Kenneally

I have adored the author's Hundred Oaks series and was a bit nervous that this book wouldn't live up to my expectations. Boy, I'm so glad how wrong I was. Lulu and Alex's complicated love story is told over four years of high school but only on May 7th, the day of their annual field trip. Besides the present day, readers are given flashbacks to important events in their lives that occurred during the year.

I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed but it was the end of the day. I really hope the author writes an epilogue for everyone taking place on May 7th a few years in the future.

SPOILER ALERT! This is a companion story that takes place after When Dimple Met Rishi. While it’s not necessary to read the previous book first, I wouldn’t want to spoil any of the details for you.

This companion book centers around Rishi's younger brother Ashish after his breakup with Celia that began in the first book. Not only does the author continue to focus on Indian American culture but body image and self-esteem as well. Down in the dumps over his break up, Ash decides that if his parents’ arranged relationship for his older brother has worked out, then he is willing to try it as well. When Sweetie’s mother turns down Ash’s parents’ request to date, Sweetie decided to take matters into her own hands and goes against her parents’ wishes. Once again, another sweet romance that also centers on the main characters coming into their own.

This was my first Brigid Kemmerer book despite the fact that her Elementals series has been in a box by my bed for years. Fortunately, this will not be my last book by this author. I literally blew through this book in two days. Maegan and Rob’s story sucked me in and didn’t let go until the end, which was a heartbreaking mixture of emotions. Kemmerer’s contemporary novels are now on my auto-read list.

This book was probably one of the best I've read from this author lately. I wasn't really sure where all of the characters were going, I was surprised by the direction Kate Bailey's life took. Not immediately sure we reach boy's attention was focused, I think everyone was able to overcome what each perceived as inescapable obstacles. Kate really grew as a character who saw that there was more than one path available in her future. Casting old grudges aside and seeing other others problems more clearly, Kate's Awakening isn't overnight or sugar-coated. One of the best parts of the book is the open ending for the Raider to ponder the future of each of the characters you will grow to love.
