All You Desire by Kirsten Miller (Eternal Ones book 2)

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't read The Eternal Ones yet, Stop! I don't want to ruin a good story for you.

A year has passed since the events in The Eternal Ones and Haven and Iain are making a life for themselves in Rome. On a walk through the city, Haven hears three young girls discuss a past life and mention the name Adam. Haven senses that she and Iain are no longer safe in Rome and that the Ouroboros Society and its diabolical leader, Adam Rosier are aware if their whereabouts. When Iain suggests a trip to Florence to show her something, Haven readily agrees.



While in Florence learning about one of her past lives in which she and her best friend Beau were siblings, Haven’s world begins to fall apart. First, her credit cards are canceled because Iain’s mother is contesting his will. Then Haven’s mother calls to tell her that Beau is missing. He went to New York on the assumption that he would meet his soul mate from a past life just like Haven and Iain. Desperate to locate Beau before something befalls him, against her better judgment, Haven and Iain return to New York.


In New York, Haven and Iain stay with Frances Whitman, a relative of Haven’s from a previous life. On a vision from her friend, Leah Frizell, Haven and Frances go to an exclusive spa to visit Phoebe, a Pythia who can tell Haven about her previous life in Florence in an attempt to gain some insight into who may have a hand in Beau’s disappearance. Unfortunately Haven runs into Adam who claims he had no idea she was back in New York. He tells Haven that Phoebe is a fake. Adam tells her that he is willing to wait for her love and that he would be happy to help in the search for Beau. Frances is frantic when she finally locates Haven.


Haven decides that she needs some time to herself and takes the subway home. A woman beside of her warns her about being followed by one of Adam’s men. She helps Haven lose him and she gets back on the subway. Another woman finds her and insists that Phoebe can help her. She gives Haven directions on where to meet them later that night. Soon Haven and Iain meet the Horae, twelve sisters from ancient Greece who were killed because of Adam. They have made each of their reincarnated lives an opportunity to fight the evil that Adam embodies. He has escaped their imprisonments in the past but with Haven as bait, the Horae believe this time will work.


With Beau missing, Haven decides she would do anything to help find Beau, including being near Adam. Will Haven be able to resist Adam’s charms? Can the Horae finally imprison Adam once and for all? Will Beau be found? And will Haven and Iain survive not only as a couple but come out with their lives?

The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore (Lorien Legacies book 2)

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't read I Am Number Four yet, Stop! I don't want to ruin the story for you.

The Power of Six is told from two different viewpoints, John Smith, aka Four and a new character, Marina, also known as Seven. Two different typefaces and the changing of viewpoints every two chapters help the reader keep track of who’s who.

John, Six and Sam have left Paradise, Ohio and the battle at the school with the Mogadorians. Soon John and Sam are suspected terrorists and on the FBI’s most wanted list. As they travel around the country incognito, readers learn more about Four and Six’s life since coming to Earth. John struggles with Henri’s death and leaving behind Sarah Hart, the love of his life.

While on the lam in the United States, Number Seven now known as Marina and her Cepan, Adeline, are introduced. For many years, the two have lived in relative obscurity in a convent in Spain. Adeline has chosen a life of God and steadfastly refuses to train Marina in her legacies. Left alone, Marina has come into them by accident at times. Upon seeing the news reports of the wanted fugitive John Smith from the US, Marina is certain that he is also one of the nine who escaped from Lorien. She begins to make plans to find him since Adeline is no help to her. Soon a new orphan, seven-year-old Ella comes to the convent and Marina enlists her aid to help locate her chest.

Before too long, the Mogadorians not only have John, Six and Sam in their sights but Marina as well. A bit slow in the beginning with the background details about Marina’s life, the second half of the book explodes as Four and Six attempt to join up with Seven. Three have been killed and only six are left.

This volume ends in a major cliffhanger and this reader is eagerly awaiting word if there will be another book.

I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Six’s Legacy

Six’s Legacy is a novella in eBook form that briefly tells Six’s background story on Earth with her Cepan Katarina. Their capture by the Mogadorians and Katarina’s death is chapter eight of The Power of Six if you don’t read the novella.

Goliath by Scott Westerfeld (Leviathan book 3)

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t read the first two books in the Leviathan trilogy, STOP! I don’t want to ruin a great story for you.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson (Fire and Thorns book one)

Once every century, God chooses one person who is destined for greatness. They are marked with the Godstone in their navel. Lucero-Elisa de Riqueza, Princess of Orovalle, is now the chosen one.

Elisa, the younger daughter of King Hitzedar, is not destined to become queen. That role will fall to her older sister Juana-Alodia. Instead on her naming day, Elisa was chosen by God to bear the Godstone. So on her sixteenth birthday, Elisa finds herself becoming an unwitting bride to King Alejandro de Vega of neighboring Joya d’Arena. As Lady Aneaxi and Nurse Ximena help her into her too tight wedding gown, Elisa hopes that her new husband will be old and fat, as she is overweight. When Alejandro lifts her veil for a kiss, she realizes that he “is the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen.”

Elisa and Alejandro spent a chaste wedding night and he tells he that he could use a friend back at court. The next morning, they begin their journey to Joya. Elisa travels with Aneaxi and Ximena. Along the way, their caravan is attacked in the jungle. Elisa and Ximena pull Aneaxi to safety after she breaks her leg. Elisa then grabs a knife and kills one of the three men attacking Alejandro. He lets her know that he is grateful and that she can decide the fate of the one prisoner. When Elisa questions him, he realizes she is the bearer of the Godstone. Before he can say anything, Ximena stabs him through the neck with her hairpin. Elisa realizes that she knows very little about her lifelong companions. Just before they reach Alejandro’s castle in the city, Elisa realizes that Aneaxi is mortally injured and is with her when she dies.

When the group arrives at Alejandro’s castle, it is late at night and no one is there to greet them. Alejandro asks Elisa to keep their marriage a secret for the time being and she is greatly disappointed. The next morning, a young maid named Cosme knocks at her door to help her get ready for breakfast. Elisa soon meets the people at the court and she feels out of place. When Alejandro comes to her room late one night, he informs her that he will be gone for a month to Puerto Verde to visit his mother and retrieve his son. Elisa is crestfallen but he reminds her of their wedding night chat about him needing a friend. He tells Elisa that he needs her to be his eyes and ears around the palace while he is away. She reluctantly agrees.

Upon meeting Father Nicandro, Elisa finds a friend and possibly someone who will tell her about her destiny with the Godstone. Elisa soon learns by what her family meant by when they said she would be safer in Joya because she was too well known as the bearer in Orovalle. She sneaks out late one night to meet with Father Nicardro to learn more about her destiny and decides to confront Ximena with what she has learned. But before that can happen, she is drugged and kidnapped one night from her bed. Soon she is being dragged through the desert and learns that Cosme is behind her predicament. Surprisingly her brother Humberto turns out to be her protector.

What exactly will Elisa’s destiny be as the bearer of the Godstone? Why has her father made a political marriage for her with Alejandro? What secret is being kept from Elisa? Will Elisa and Alejandro have a real marriage? Why has Cosme kidnapped Elisa? And will sparks fly between Elisa and Humberto? Join Elisa on her journey as she discovers not only her future, but her past as well.

The trilogy continues with The Crown of Embers in the fall of 2012 and The Bitter Kingdom in the fall of 2013.

Needless to say, this series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Elisa reminds me of Raisa from Cinda Williams Chima’s Seven Realms series. Definitely looking forwarded to where Elisa’s adventures take her.

Wither by Lauren DeStefano (Chemical Garden Trilogy book one)

Science perfected the human body seventy years ago. All illnesses such as cancer and even allergies were eradicated. Soon natural selection was pushed aside for the new technology of healthy children. This first generation is approaching old age gracefully and is practically immortal. Rhine and her fellow sister wives, Jenna and Cecily, reside on a floor to themselves along with Linden’s first wife, Rose. Rose has just turned twenty and is sick with the virus and dying. Rhine soon strikes up a friendship with Rose. Rose fills her in about their husband and makes Rose promise to look after Linden after her death. It’s a promise Rhine doesn’t intend to keep.


Soon Rhine and her sister wives each find their separate niches in the household. Young Cecily is enjoying her new role and aims to please their new husband. Jenna keeps to herself and observes all that is going on. Rhine continues to dream and look for a way to escape back to Manhattan and her brother Rowan. She begins to confide in her attendant Gabriel and soon sparks begin to fly. But life in the mansion isn’t free. Linden’s father, housemaster Vaughn, keeps the girls on tight leashes, especially Rhine. As time goes on, Rhine begins to learn all of the intricacies and intimacies of her new family, the good and the bad.


Will Rhine accept her new role as one of Linden’s wives or does she find a way to escape from underneath Housemaster Vaughn’s control? What secrets does she uncover along the way? Who among the wives has the first baby? Is Linden really as clueless about his father as he seems? Join Rhine’s journey as she struggles to make the most of the hand she has been dealt?

The first book in a trilogy, the story continues with Eternity on 2012 followed by Envy in 2013. This book took awhile to interest me but in the end I am glad I stuck with it and cannot wait to see what else the Furies have in mind for the citizens of Ascension.
